The original barn burned in a spectacular fire in 1936. This building, a late 19th century replica barn, was constructed by the Museum in 1985 to house a collection of early farming equipment. We are presently in the midst of a creating a new Museum within the Museum, the San Juan Island Museum of History and Industry (MHI) which will exhibit and interpret the early island industries of fishing, farming, logging and lime quarrying and processing.

Mission Statement
The purpose of the San Juan Historical Society and its museum is to share and interpret the story of the peoples of San Juan Island. The Historical Society will assemble, collect, preserve, exhibit and make available for future generations, historical data, information and artifacts which illustrate the heritage of San Juan Island. Collections, programs and publications will provide for the enjoyment and education of residents and visitors.
